What we are about…
The SMSG was formed in 1978 by a group of metro Detroiters interested in S gauge model railroading. Our membership includes modelers, collectors (AF, hi-rail and scale), manufacturers and distributors. In recent years the membership has ranged from 40 to 50 model railroaders, coming from as far away as Western Michigan, Northern Ohio and Ontario, Canada.
Many of us trace our roots back to the toy trains of the 1950s and 60s, building tinplate layouts from famous names like Lionel, American Flyer, and Marx.
We don’t limit ourselves to any one facet of the hobby. Members build home layouts in scale, standard and narrow gauge, Hi Rail and American Flyer Tinplate. As a club, we've built several modules, based on the S-Mod Standards. The modules are set up at local railroad functions. We also have a small display layout running at the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, MI and a larger display layout that is displayed at train shoes and model railroad conventions.

Official SMSG 2010 SPRING S SPREE CAR
Our 2010 American Flyer “S” Gauge car is made for us by Lionel LLC. Gilbert’s Great Northern car #24047 was issued in 1959 without opening doors. Our car will be produced in a very limited quantity, and will feature opening doors, die cast trucks and numbered 6210. In 1959, the Great Northern railroad made 500 of these cars in Vermillion Red and numbered the series 6000-6499.
