   At Lionel, we are proud to present the finest, most advanced locomotives—powerful models that come to you with tried-and-true performance and cutting-edge technology. Over the years, we have revolutionized this great hobby with advances in locomotive traction, train operation, and on-board sounds. Lionel trains feel more and more like the real railroad. Use this guide to learn about the incredible features that Lionel locomotives offer today.


  •Operation
  Transformer Control
   All Lionel locomotives—even the most sophisticated engines—can be controlled by a basic transformer. Even older transformers can run our most advanced engines.
TrainMaster Command Control
   Locomotives equipped with the incredible TrainMaster Command Control system are controlled by the commands from your CAB-1 Remote Controller, giving you the freedom to operate your trains while walking around your layout. Unlock the advanced sounds and features of your Command-equipped locomotives and, better yet, operate multiple engines on the same track, at the same time! Installation is as easy as hooking up a transformer, and operation is simple to learn.
ElectroCouplers
   Open these couplers anywhere on the layout—without uncoupling tracks. The CAB-1 Remote Controller activates ElectroCouplers with the TrainMaster Command Control system. Also, be sure to listen for authentic RailSounds of the coupler in operation!
Odyssey System
   Heavy loads and steep grades are no problem for locomotives equipped with the Odyssey system, “cruise control” for your locomotive. No matter what, Odyssey-equipped locomotives will maintain the speed you set. Watch your locomotive as it creeps through the yard or fights up a grade without hesitation, regardless of the long string of cars behind it.
Wireless Tether Connection between Locomotive and Tender
   Looking to enhance the appearance of its locomotives, Lionel developed the infrared Wireless Tether so that the locomotive and tender could communicate without cumbersome wiring between the units.
Magne-Traction
   Always on the cutting edge of model railroad technology, Lionel developed Magne-Traction in 1950. The wheels are actually magnetized, increasing track adhesion for extra traction and stability around curves.
  Traction Tire(s)
   On some locomotives Traction Tires on one or more of the powered driving wheels provide extra strength and stability for hauling long strings of cars. Traction Tires grip the rails, enhancing tractive effort for extra pulling power.


  •Sound and Smoke
RailSounds
   Always a favorite feature, the impressive RailSounds sound system brings the real sounds of the railroad to your layout. From the mechanical symphony of the locomotives, to the commotion of the station, you will be impressed by the digitally recorded samples of these special and authentic sounds.
  MultiHorn/MultiWhistle
   The sounds of the horn or the whistle actually change with each blast—just like the real thing. From the short, trumpet-like blasts of a diesel horn, to the breath-taking cries of the steam whistle, these familiar sounds replicate the magic of the rails.
Braking Sounds
   Press the brake button on your TMCC CAB-1 remote or rapidly decrease your transformer/controller and listen for the screeching of your locomotive’s brakes.
Shut-down and Start-up
   Fire up your locomotive just like the real thing! Listen as the diesel engine turns over or the steam locomotive ramps up. You will also hear the sounds of the giant locomotive gradually fade away when you turn off power.
Steam Let-off/Blow-off (TrainMaster Command Control required)
   At the press of a button, your steam locomotive will replicate the sound of hot steam being released from the cylinders.
Diesel RPM
   Throttle up your locomotive and listen as the engine’s RPM increases. While the RPM sounds automatically increase with the speed of the engine and the power supplied to the track, you can also fine-tune the levels with your CAB-1 remote.
DynaChuff
   A favorite feature among steam fans, DynaChuff is the varying intensity of the locomotive’s chuffing, synchronized with the speed of the locomotive. Watch as the smoke billows out of your locomotive’s stack in time with the chuffing sounds and the turning of the wheels!
TowerCom Announcements (TrainMaster Command Control required)
   “1361, you’re clear for departure.” Locomotives equipped with TowerCom feature a specialized announcement or announcements calling out your locomotive number, operated at your command. Listen for your locomotive’s roadname or number as you prepare to take ‘er out!
CrewTalk Communications (TrainMaster Command Control required)
   Strain to hear the crackling, unintelligible radio communications inside of your locomotive, caboose, or other cars. Operate several CrewTalk-equipped locomotives with CrewTalk-equipped rolling stock, and you will find that these communications are sequenced to sound as though personnel stationed at different parts of the train are radioing each other, to enhance the realism of Lionel operation.
StationSounds (TrainMaster Command Control required)
   Listen to the sounds of the busy platform! Housed in a passenger car in the consist, you will hear the station’s loudspeaker announce arrivals and departures. The conductor makes enroute announcements, too.
 



 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
•Illumination
Directional Lighting
   Most TrainMaster Command Control diesel locomotives and TMCC equipped steam locomotives with a headlight and tender back-up light feature Directional Lighting. Operate a TMCC equipped diesel in forward and the headlight illuminates the mainline, in reverse the headlight shuts off and the rear headlight or the headlight of a second diesel (in a multi-unit lash-up) will shine. For TMCC equipped steam locomotives, the headlight remains on in both forward and reverse operation. In reverse, the tender back-up light (if present) will shine.
Marker Lights
   These lights are located on the boiler front or top of some steam locomotives and on the rear of some steam locomotive tenders. They are also located on the ends of some diesel locomotives.
Lighted Number Boards
   These are located on the boiler top of some steam locomotives and on the ends of some diesel locomotives.
Strobe Light
   This flashing warning light is located on the roof of some diesel locomotives.
Ditch Lights
   These low-mounted lights serve as close-range secondary headlights on some diesel locomotives.
