Electric U-Boats
---For 2002, Lionel offers two new
liveries for our popular scale-sized U30C’s and a newly detailed
U28CG.
The U30C gained distinction as GE’s best-selling member of
the U-series. These 3,000 horsepower freighters gave their archrival,
GM’s ElectroMotive Division, a run for their money. The Delaware
& Hudson U30’s in their brilliant blue, gray and yellow
livery fought the tough uphill grades of that railroad’s
Pennsylvania division, and won. The D & H U30C is only available
at authorized Lionel Service Centers. The Chessie System only
rostered 13 U30C’s, but these locomotives still drew top
assignments, especially in coal country.
---Unlike the U30C’s, the U28CG’s
were first destined for passenger service and were commissioned
on only one railroad, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe. Although
the same in overall dimensions to a U30C, the U28CG had some distinct
differences. It had a raised radiator section, scoop on its left
side and steam generator equipment on its roof, which marked it
as a passenger locomotive. Beginning in the mid-sixties, the Santa
Fe used the U28CG to replace its fleet of aging F-units on its
premier passenger trains.
