Freedom
Train
In
1946, although Americans were still celebrating the victory in World
War II, they had to contend with postwar economic problems and signs
of a coming cold war with the Soviet Union. To prepare the people
for the times ahead, Attorney General Tom C. Clark and others in
the government promoted a movement to re-dedicate citizens to the
blessings and values of the American system. The Freedom Train was
the showpiece of this National Education Program. Along for the
ride were two dozen U.S. Marines to provide security for the trains
priceless cargo. Running from September 17, 1947 until January 22,
1949, the Freedom Train carried over 100 of the nations most
important documents to cities and towns in each of the then 48 states.
These documents included the Declaration of Independence, the Bill
of Rights and the United Nations Charter. During its trip around
the country, the rolling exhibit received 3,521,841 visitors.
Some of the greatest names in railroading donated
equipment to the project. The American Locomotive Company and General
Electric provided one of their modern 2000 horsepower PA-1 passenger
diesel locomotives. Specially modified cars were provided by the
Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, Pennsylvania Railroad and
the Pullman Car Manufacturing Company.
Our O gauge version of this special train honors
a very unique piece of American and railroading history. An all-new
ALCo PA-1 diesel locomotive pulls four Heavyweight Passenger Cars
with detailed interiors, including two all-new Heavyweight Sleeper
Cars. The locomotives horn even blows the first few notes

and passenger cars all feature many separately applied details including
brass eagles, Freedom train signs, the Great Seal of the United
