THE LIONEL ARCHIVE
COLLECTION
Once
again, we take a trip to the mysterious and sacred Lionel Archives where
products that were developed, planned for and prototyped – but never produced
– reside. What forces were at work so many years ago that prevented them
from seeing the light of day? While we are only left to speculate, we
can, at last, see these products the way they were intended to be on layouts
and in the collections of Lionel enthusiasts around the world.

Fort Knox Mint Car
Shown in Lionel’s 1962 catalog as part of the “Plainsman” General set,
this red Fort Knox mint car was nonetheless never produced. In its place
was a silver version shown later in the catalog as a separate sale item.
Perhaps the move was made to utilize available inventory or to reduce
the offerings from two to one. Whatever the case, at long last you can
own the red version 39 years later.
