Long Island TMCC BB-3 Electric Locomotive (PWR #328A, DMY #329B) Noisily shuttling through complicated coach yard switches, the deceptively diminutive BB class electric locomotives proved the workhorses of passenger stations in Philadelphia, New York and Long Island. Affectionately dubbed "rats" by railfans and railroaders, the mighty little boxcabs switched consists for famous name trains and commuter runs alike. First built by Altoona in 1926, the BB class ran in pairs through the 1930s on both Pennsy and Long Island rails. Later B1's, numbered 5684 to 5697, operated only as single units. Their square headlights easily distinguished these later B1's. None of this later type was given Long Island livery. Constructed almost entirely of die-cast metal, each of these new Lionel models includes headlight, handrail and other detail distinctions specific to their particular roadname and era. Pennsylvania and Long Island versions feature decoration specific to the 1920s and 1930s when the switchers still prototypically operated in pairs and were just beginning to run as single units. Complete with dual ElectroCouplers, the powered BB unit can even run independently in Command Control or Conventional Transformer Mode. Matching sets of heavyweight passenger cars, complete with all-new sprung 4-wheel trucks, are available separately.
