Norfolk & Western TMCC Scale 4-8-4 J-Class Northern #611
In 1950, three J class steamers rolled out of the Norfolk & Western Railway's famed Roanoke shops. Fatefully, they would prove the last 4-8-4's built in America. The bullet-nosed behemoths sped signature trains such as the Powhatan Arrow along the N&W's entire 676 mile mainline often at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour. Although retired from service after less than a decade, one of the graceful J's remained a true steam survivor. N&W #611 headed excursion runs as late as the mid-1990s and is currently on display at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.
With a vented pilot, solid pilot wheels, and a flat tender deck, this scale-sized Lionel model specifically portrays the #611 during the height of her passenger service. Along with these details, the J includes a wide array of enhancements from its original 2001 release. These features range from the RailSounds 5.0 sound system to smaller, more prototypically sized classification lights.
