Red River Lumber Boxcab Diesel w/Horn #502
Red River Lumber Company was founded in Akeley, Minnesota but with thinning woods in the region, owner T. B. Walker – then reputed to be the fifth richest man in the world – purchase nearly 1.25 million acres of timberland in the Mount Shasta region of California.
Our Red River Lumber Boxcab was inspired by a photo from the Special Collections of the University of Nevada-Reno Library. This load of timber is likely headed to the Red River Lumber facility in Westwood, California - the largest pine lumber mill in the world from 1913 to 1956.
An interesting side light: Paul Bunyan and Babe the Ox were created in 1914 by W.B. Laughead, for a Red River Lumber advertising campaign. Paul Bunyan was such a successful creation, they expanded his adventures into a promotional booklet which was distributed for decades until Paul and Babe were transformed from advertising to folklore.
