A modified version with distinctive, low-mounted air intakes called the SD-40T-2 was built for service in the snowsheds and tunnels of the West. The TMCC-equipped Lionel SD-40-2 is available in Jersey Central livery and the "tunnel motor" version is available in the "kodachrome" scheme of the proposed Southern Pacific Santa Fe merger.
