New Jersey Southern Brass Hybrid LEGACY 4-4-0 #26 Jay Gould Much has been written about railroad financier Jay Gould and a fair bit of it is rather nasty. One of the robber baron's ventures was the New Jersey Southern - a forerunner to the New Jersey Central. Gould ordered three 4-4-0s from the Brooks Locomotive Works. Two were named New York and Baltimore and were fine locomotives in their own right, but the third he named for himself and pulled out all the stops. The cab was black walnut. All locomotive fittings were nickel plated. Gold leaf, multi-colored scrolls, murals and of course a cameo of Gould decorated every visible inch of the machine. The locomotive entered service in July of 1873 on the express trains to Long Branch and was certainly a sight to behold.
