Pennsylvania LEGACY S1 6-4-4-6 6100 As-Built Few locomotives made a public debut and statement like the Pennsylvania's "Big Engine" - the S1. Unveiled at the 1939 World's Fair, No. 6100 ran under its own power before crowds on a special bed of rollers. The 140 foot long streamlined behemoth shocked the imagination with its promise of speed, power and bright futures ahead. Although the tender said "American Railroads" at the Fair, the Pennsylvania wasted no time nor effort in their own branding of the S1. Whatever its successes and failures as an operating locomotive, the S1 did its job well as a marketing tool for the Pennsy's modernized passenger trains. Owing to its length (8 feet longer than the Big Boy and built on a non-articulated frame) the S1 was limited to service west of Crestline Ohio. Designed for operation in excess of 100 mph, there are unsubstantiated reports of the engine exceeding 150 on the racetracks of the PRR's western mainlines. But success and fame was fleeting. The locomotive was last run in 1944 and scrapped in 1949. Eight decades later, the S1 still captures the imagination. Available for the first time in nearly 20 years from Lionel, the Big Engine is back and better than ever with Legacy, Bluetooth, Safety Valve Steam and many more improvements since its introduction. The model is available in four paint variations: The American Railroads livery of the fair, its as-built appearance, a calendar-art inspired version which features a winged keystone on the front, and a fanciful Tuscan Red and gold scheme inspired by and a great match for, the Pennsy's fleet of modernism cars.
