US Military RR Brass Hybrid LEGACY 4-4-0 Gen. McCallum Although the real General McCallum differed in some details from our tooling, we wanted to make sure the important history of the US Military Railroad and the role locomotives like these 4-4-0s played in the Civil War wasn't left out of this release. Built by the Mason Machine Works, the McCallum arrived in 1864. It was one of several five foot gauge engines purchased for operating on captured lines in the South. The bold colors and elaborate scroll work on the tender are a radical departure from the simple, functional decoration we've come to expect in military vehicles. The McCallum hauled troops, munitions and supply trains until the end of the war when it and many others were sold to railroads which needed new locomotives to power their growing business.
