December 14, 2005
It’s been a long time since there has been a more ambitious, anticipated and speculated about Lionel project than the Acela. The combination of new functions -- like the tilting mechanism, the new pantograph operating system, the fully functional doors and special lighting features -- made getting it done one of the most challenging and, ultimately, satisfying undertakings we’ve had in many years.
That’s the good news.
The bad news is that we’re not going to ship the Acela in 2005, as I had promised. A combination of some delays at our factory, and our own real desire to make sure that all of the new features work perfectly, made it possible to ship only about half of the Acela sets before Christmas. After some soul searching, I decided that our dealers had better things to do this busy holiday season than to figure out which customers would get their long-anticipated Acela sets, and which would not. So, I decided to wait until we could ship them all at once.
Happily, you won’t have to wait long, and we will be shipping all of the Acelas by the middle of January. We hope you’ll be as happy with the final product as we are.
