Lionel Announces the Pennsylvania S1 6-4-4-6 Duplex
Second Special Introduction for 2003
(Chesterfield, Mich.,) – Lionel announces the 6-38024 Pennsylvania S1 6-4-4-6 Duplex, the second special introduction for 2003. Produced from all new tooling, this die-cast metal locomotive is the longest locomotive ever produced by Lionel in O gauge, being 3/4" longer than the previous record holder, the Union Pacific "Big Boy."
"We were guided by copies of actual Pennsylvania Railroad construction drawings for the #6100 and painstakingly recreated the classic curves of this Raymond Loewy masterpiece," said Lionel Product Manager Todd Wagner.
The bodies of both the scale-sized locomotive and tender are constructed of tough die-cast metal, with separately applied metal details such as accurate builder’s plates, tender classification plate, handrails, opening cab roof hatch and see-through vents.
Standout features in this locomotive include TrainMaster® Command Control, the Odyssey® System for speed control, a refined Conventional Transformer Control Mode, the new Lionel synchronized smoke unit, and the industry-standard RailSoundsÔ sound system with two FatBoy™ speakers.
In addition to the digitally reproduced whistle, bell, CrewTalk™ and TowerCom™ sounds, the S1 also features a realistic auxiliary air horn that can be triggered independently of the whistle, just like the real thing.
"Our model is even prototypically painted following copies of Pennsylvania Railroad painting diagrams for the S1," said Wagner. "The Pennsylvania S1 proved to be challenging project, much like the original."
