Lionel Announces the Southern Pacific AC-9

Third Special Introduction for 2003

(Chesterfield, Mich.,) – Lionel announces the 6-38031 Southern Pacific AC-9, the third special introduction for 2003. Produced from all new tooling, this die-cast metal steam locomotive represents the first time that this powerful 2-8-8-4 "Yellowstone" type has ever been modeled for the O gauge market in die-cast metal.

"The Southern Pacific was famous for their AC-class of mostly Cab-Forward locomotives. This ‘backwards’ Cab-Forward is unique because it was one of the few articulated locomotives in the world that had streamlined features applied to the boiler," said Lionel product manager Todd Wagner.

The bodies of both the scale-sized locomotive and tender are constructed of die-cast metal and include separately applied metal details and piping, along with accurate builder’s plates, trust plates and superheater patent plates, flickering firebox in the cab and an authentically detailed and illuminated cab interior.

High-performance features in this scale-sized Lionel locomotive include the RailSounds® sound system with a supplemental auxiliary air horn sound that is controlled via the TrainMaster® Command Control CAB-1Ò Remote Controller, and dual FatBoy™ speakers to ensure that the sound reproduction is the most realistic and robust in the industry.

"The flexibility of our TMCC® and RailSounds systems allow us to really make these locomotives come alive," said Wagner.

Adding to the realism is a synchronized, fan-driven smoke unit so that you can watch the smoke puff in perfect time to the mesmerizing valve gear and the hard-working audible chuff of the AC-9.
